5 Common Skincare Mistakes You're Probably Making (and How to Fix Them)
We all make skincare mistakes from time to time, but some habits can actually harm your skin in the long run. In this article, we’ll highlight five common skincare mistakes and share easy fixes to help you get the best results from your routine.
Skincare Mistake #1: Using Harsh Products That Strip Your Skin
Mistake: Many people believe that harsh cleansers or exfoliants are necessary to remove all dirt and oil from their skin. While this may seem true for those with very oily skin or in extreme conditions (like working in a coal mine), it’s generally unnecessary. Harsh products can strip your skin’s natural oils, leading to dryness, irritation, and even an overproduction of oil as your skin tries to compensate. Unless you have oily skin or live in a particularly humid environment, it's best to avoid harsh products, especially in the winter.
Solution: Opt for gentle, hydrating cleansers that are suited to your skin type, and avoid over-exfoliating. Look for products with ingredients like ceramides or hyaluronic acid to help maintain and strengthen your skin’s protective barrier. For most people, exfoliating 1-3 times a week is sufficient. If you’re using a retinoid, you may want to reduce exfoliation even further. AHA's (alpha hydroxy acids) are ideal for most skin types, while BHA's (beta hydroxy acids) should be reserved for those with truly oily or acne-prone skin.
2. Skipping Sunscreen (Even in Winter or on Cloudy Days)
Mistake: Skipping sunscreen is a common mistake, especially on cloudy days or during the winter months. While the sun may not feel as intense, UV rays can still penetrate clouds and cause skin damage. Even though the UV index is lower in the winter, especially in areas farther from the equator, daily exposure to low UV levels can accumulate over time and lead to long-term skin damage. Additionally, many modern sunscreens offer protection not just from UV rays, but also from pollution, environmental toxins, blue (HEV) light, and infrared radiation. If you work from home, you're still being exposed to blue light from your screens, which can also contribute to skin aging.
Solution: Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher every morning, even if you’re indoors or it’s cloudy. Choose a sunscreen that provides protection against both UVA and UVB rays, such as a mineral-based sunscreen, to guard against premature aging, hyperpigmentation, and skin cancer.
3. Over-Exfoliating or Using the Wrong Type of Exfoliator
Mistake: Exfoliation is essential for smooth, glowing skin, but overdoing it or using the wrong exfoliants can cause irritation, redness, and damage to the skin’s protective barrier. Physical scrubs with large, rough particles can create microtears, leading to further irritation. While some scrubs may be suitable for certain skin types, it’s always best to consult with your esthetician to determine the right exfoliation routine for your skin.
Solution: Stick to gentle exfoliation, ideally 1-4 times per week, depending on your skin type. Choose chemical exfoliants like AHAs or enzymes, which dissolve dead skin cells without the need for scrubbing. For oily or acne-prone skin, BHAs (like salicylic acid) can be effective, but should be used with caution. Mandelic acid is a gentle yet powerful option that works well for all skin types year-round. Always consult with your esthetician to personalize your exfoliation routine.
4. Not Adjusting Your Skincare Routine for Seasonal Changes
Mistake: Many people stick to the same skincare routine year-round, which can cause issues when the weather changes. Cold weather can dry out the skin, while hot, humid weather can cause excess oil production.
Solution: Adjust your routine according to the season. In winter, use more hydrating products (like richer moisturizers or oils), and in summer, switch to lighter, oil-free formulas.
5. Neglecting Your Neck, Chest, and Hands
Mistake: Most people focus their skincare routines on their face, neglecting other areas like the neck, chest, and hands, which are often the first to show signs of aging or sun damage.
Solution: Don’t forget to extend your skincare regimen beyond your face. Use sunscreen on your neck, chest, and hands daily, and apply your moisturizer and treat regularly with exfoliants and targeted serums as well.
