The Ultimate Guide to Glowing Skin

Achieving glowing, healthy skin isn't just about applying products, it's about nurturing your skin with a consistent routine, the right ingredients, and some lifestyle habits that support your skin's natural beauty. Whether you're a skincare newbie or a seasoned beauty enthusiast, this guide has everything you need to unlock your skin’s glow.

1. Know Your Skin Type

Before you dive into skincare routines or products, it’s essential to identify your skin type. Everyone’s skin is different, and knowing whether you have oily, dry, combination, or sensitive skin will help you choose the right products and avoid unnecessary irritation.

  • Oily Skin: Skin tends to produce excess sebum, resulting in shine.

  • Dry Skin: Skin lacks moisture and can feel tight, flaky, or rough.

  • Combination Skin: A mix of both oily and dry areas, typically with an oily T-zone.

  • Sensitive Skin: Easily irritated, often resulting in redness or reactions.

2. Double Cleanse for Clean Skin

No matter your skin type, double cleansing is a game-changer for achieving that healthy glow. The first cleanse removes makeup, sunscreen, and pollutants, while the second cleanse ensures that your skin is deeply cleansed. This allows subsequent ingredients to work properly on the skin.

  • Oil-based Cleanser: The ideal first step in double cleansing is typically an oil-based cleanser to break down makeup and sunscreen.
However, oil cleansing isn’t for everyone. Some individuals, especially those who are acne-prone, may find that oil cleansers can trigger breakouts. If you’re unsure, I can help you choose the right option based on your skin’s needs.

  • Water-based Cleanser: Follow up with a gentle water-based cleanser (cream or gel) to remove any residue and leave your skin feeling clean and refreshed.

Exception to the rule: Some cleansers are formulated to do it all in one step. Products like Colorescience Barrier Pro Cleanser or Marini Skin Solutions Bioglycolic Face Cleanser are designed to thoroughly cleanse the skin without the need for double cleansing.

3. Exfoliation: Finding the Right Balance

Exfoliating helps to remove dead skin cells and reveal smoother, brighter skin. It can improve texture, unclog pores, and enhance the absorption of other products. However, over-exfoliating can damage your skin barrier, leading to irritation, dryness, or increased sensitivity, so it’s important to find the right balance for your skin.

  • Chemical exfoliants (like AHAs or BHAs) are typically recommended for most skin types. They work by gently dissolving dead skin cells without the need for scrubbing.

  • Physical scrubs are generally reserved for oilier skin types with a lot of visible buildup, but even then they should be used with caution and not too frequently.

  • If you're using a retinoid, especially a prescription-strength one, you may not need to exfoliate at all, since retinoids already promote cellular turnover.

Exfoliation is usually recommended 2–3 times per week, but this varies greatly depending on your skin’s condition, sensitivity, and the other products you're using.

If you’re unsure where to start, it’s always best to consult with an esthetician or book a facial. This way, you can determine what type of exfoliation (if any) is right for your skin, and how often to use it.

A great exfoliant to consider for almost all skin types is the Marini Skin Solutions Bioclear Face Lotion. It combines glycolic, salicylic, and azelaic acid to gently resurface the skin, improve clarity, and target breakouts and texture. However, if you have very sensitive skin, proceed with caution and patch test first.

4. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate

Hydration is key to healthy, glowing skin. Even if you have oily skin, hydration is still important. Use a hydrating serum or moisturizer that suits your skin type. Look for ingredients like:

  • Hyaluronic Acid or Glycerin: Humectants that help retain moisture and plump the skin.

  • Ceramides: These lipids help maintain your skin’s natural barrier, preventing moisture loss.

  • Panthenol (Vitamin B5): Soothes and hydrates while supporting skin repair.

  • Aloe Vera: A gentle, natural hydrator that also helps calm irritation and redness.

My go-to hydrator for almost all skin types is the Fulvic Elixir Serum from GlyMed+. It’s packed with hydrating, barrier-supporting ingredients and works beautifully for all skin types, from dry and sensitive to oily and acne-prone skin.

5. Sun Protection Is Non-Negotiable

One of the easiest ways to keep your skin looking youthful and radiant is by protecting it from the sun. UV rays are one of the leading causes of premature aging and skin damage, including dark spots and wrinkles. A broad-spectrum sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher) should be your go-to every single day, rain or shine.

I typically recommend a mineral sunscreen with zinc oxide because most people can apply it around the eye area without irritation. Furthermore, it is a calming skincare ingredient and protects against all of the sun's rays.
My go-to sunscreen recommendation is the No Show Mineral Sunscreen SPF 50 from Colorescience. It offers strong protection, a lightweight feel, and blends beautifully into the skin with no white cast and no greasiness.

6. Prioritize Repair at Night

Nighttime is when your skin can truly repair itself. Focus on products that support cell regeneration and repair the skin barrier. Look for:

7. Don't Forget Your Neck & Chest

The skin on your neck and chest is delicate and often overlooked in skincare routines. These areas can show signs of aging, sun damage, and loss of elasticity just as easily as your face, sometimes even faster.

Be sure to apply sunscreen daily to your neck and chest, and bring your skincare products down to your décolletage for a smooth, glowing, and youthful look.

I recommend: Marini Juveneck – a targeted treatment specifically designed for the neck area and jawline. It helps improve the appearance of skin texture, hydration, and firmness where signs of aging often show first.

8. Maintain a Healthy Lifestyle

Your skin is a reflection of your overall health. Incorporating some healthy habits into your daily life can have a profound impact on your skin.

  • Stay Hydrated: Drink plenty of water to help maintain moisture levels.

  • Eat Skin-Friendly Foods: Foods rich in antioxidants, vitamins (like Vitamin C and E), and healthy fats (omega-3s) can nourish your skin.

  • Get Enough Sleep: Skin repairs itself at night. Aim for 7-9 hours of restful sleep.

  • Exercise Regularly: Exercise boosts circulation, giving your skin a healthy, natural glow and triggers the release of growth factors like fibroblasts, which play a crucial role in the production collagen and elastin.

9. Consistency is Key

Lastly, remember that consistency is the secret to a glowing complexion. Sticking to your skincare routine, along with patience, will help you see long-term results. It's about nurturing your skin daily, not just using products sporadically.

Achieving glowing skin is a holistic process that involves the right routine, products, and healthy habits. By understanding your skin, choosing the right ingredients, and protecting it daily, you'll be on the path to healthy, glowing skin in no time. Always remember that skincare is personal and what works for someone else may not work for you, so take the time to listen to your skin and adjust as needed.
